James G. Alario

November 17, 1926 — July 19, 2023

James G. Alario, 96, a native of Golden Meadow and a resident of Cut Off, passed away on July 19, 2023. Visitation will take place on Monday, July 24 at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church in Golden Meadow from 9:00- 11:00 followed by a funeral mass with a burial in the church cemetery.
James is survived by his daughter Robin Alario (Buddy), grandchildren Reggie Ougel (Martha), Andrea Warner (Thorn), David J. Gravois (Erin), great grandchildren Alli Rae Ougel and Thorn David Warner, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mr. Alario was preceded in death by his wife Thelma F. Alario, daughter Pam A. Gravois, parents Juan V. Alario and Victoria R. Alario, his brothers Jeff Alario and Robert Alario, sisters Gladys ( Bea) Theriot, Hilda Turnage and Rosemary A Blackwell.
James was a graduate of Golden Meadow High School class of 1944 where he was a proud member of the GMHS basketball team that won the parish championship his senior year.
At eighteen, James was drafted into WWII where he joined the army division. Upon returning from the war, he worked for his father at Alario Texaco Service Station. In 1951, he began his banking career at Citizens Bank in Cut Off. He later became an Assistant Cashier at State Bank and Trust in Golden Meadow. He was elected Vice President then on to Executive Vice President and Cashier. In 1963, he graduated from the School of Banking of the South. He served on the Board of Directors of La. Bankers Association, Bank Management Committee, Councilman of the Junior Bankers Association and General Chairman of the La. Bankers Association. In 1978, he was promoted to President of State Bank and Trust Company. Mr. Alario’s love and interest in the banking industry continued as he completed courses with the American Institute of Banking at Nicholls State University. He then served as the President of the South Central Chapter of the American Institute of Banking.
James was a member of the Golden Meadow Rotary Club having a perfect attendance record of 18 years. In 1965-66 he served as President and was the treasurer for a number of years thereafter.
James was very active and served as Post Commander in the American Legion Post 259. He also represented the Third District American Legion as Commander.
Mr. Alario served as President of the South Lafourche Booster Club and was recognized as the longest season ticket holder of South Lafourche High School. He loved and cheered on the Golden Meadow Lions and South Lafourche Tarpons.
James was a Third Degree Knight of Columbus Council 9000 in Golden Meadow. He served as Vice Chairman of the American Red Cross Lafourche Chapter. He loved working for the Golden Meadow Bull Club Fair and was highly regarded as the “auctioneer” for many years.
In 1981, Mr. Alario was the recipient of the Outstanding Service and Achievement Award in the field of Professionalism presented by the South Lafourche Chamber of Commerce.
As a pastime, Mr. Alario enjoyed playing golf with his buddies, going to his camp and being with his family. In his last years he was devoted to caring for his loving wife of 73 years and truly enjoyed driving around his subdivision in his golf cart with his “best dog friend” Coco Alario.
James was a successful businessman, husband, father, brother, grandfather, great grandfather and friend. He dedicated his life to serving the people of this area. His memory will live on in the hearts and minds of all who knew and loved him.
The family would like to thank Dr. Eddie Smith and his staff, Lady of the Sea Home Healthcare and Haydel Memorial Hospice along with all his devoted caregivers that gave him their utmost care and attention.
