Arden “Punkin” Rogers, 90, a native of Houma and resident of Golden Meadow passed away on June 12, 2023.
Visitation will be held at Our Lady of Prompt Succor Church in Golden Meadow on Thursday, June 15th from 9:00 a.m. until funeral time. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow in the church cemetery.
He is survived by wife, Rebecca W. Rogers; son, Arden Rogers, Jr.; grandchildren, Arden III “Joe”, Devin Danos, Lucille, Chassidy, and Abbygael; brother, Ronnie (Fru) Rogers; sister, Paulette (Wade) Fournier; mother-in-law, Ramona Williams; aunt, Marjorie Dagate.
He was proceeded in death by his parents, Noble and Eunice Rogers; brother, Dale Rogers; stepson, Kris Paul Danos; father-in-law, Jerry Williams; sisters-in-law, Gail Thibodaux and Henrietta Chiasson; nephew, Donald “Mac” McDowell.
He was an avid hunter, golfer, skier, fisherman and DEVOUT LSU football fan. Starting in 1959, he attended all but one game in Tiger Stadium for 60 straight years. The one game he missed was in an effort to win The Tarpon Fishing Tournament which he accomplished. He was the last living charter member of Tidelands Golf & Country Club.
He was born on October 13, 1932, the eldest of four children. He graduated in 1950 from Terrebonne High School and entered the US Air Force during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged at the rank of Staff Sergeant. Returning to civilian life he went to work in the oil field as a roustabout for Main Iron Works. He was then hired on by Texaco and eventually employed by Schlumberger Well Surveying Corporation and was sent to open the Golden Meadow office. Ten years removed from high school he decided to pursue an education degree at USL. He went on to graduate from Nichols State in 1962 with a bachelor degree then again in 1968 with a masters. He started classroom teaching in 1962 at Golden Meadow High School then became assistant principal at the newly formed Golden Meadow Jr. High School. During this time, he was also part owner of a tug boat company but realized his passion was education so committed to it fully. After he became principal at Golden Meadow Upper Elementary followed by becoming principal at Golden Meadow Jr. High school. In 1980 he advanced to a supervisory staff position and served in various capacities for the Lafourche Parish School Board. He was then appointed to Assistant Superintendent in 1986. In 1988 he was appointed Superintendent of Schools and served in that capacity until his retirement in 1993.
While in college he was a member of the Nichols State Golf Team and received the Nicholas President’s Esprit de Corps Award in athletics, was nominated to Phi Kappa Phi and served as Captain of the Nichols State Debate Team.
Service to his community includes teaching religion and serving as Chairman of the Building and Maintenance, & Finance Committee. He was instrumental in the refurbishing Our Lady of Prompt Succor Catholic Church. He was chairman of the Lafourche Parish Housing Authority and served 5 years on that board. He served three times as President of the Golden Meadow Lions Club, twice the recipient of the Lion of the year award, and received a special award for being the oldest member of the club with over 20 years of service.
His accomplishments through the years are, 3 times President of Tidelands Golf and Country Club, State President of the Louisiana Tarpon Club, President of the Golden Meadow Big Game Fishing Club, President, General Chairman & Secretary-Treasurer of the Golden Meadow International Tarpon Rodeo Association, Knights of Columbus, Knight of the year for 2022,Charter member and Parade Captain of the Golden Meadow Carnival Club, 3 years as Chairman of Golden Meadow Biddy Basketball, 3 times President of Central Louisiana Superintendents Association, and Golden Meadow American Legion.
